Cherry-blossom viewing spots in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo and the “hanami walk” trend!

Here in Tokyo, “haru ichiban”, the first strong southern wind of the year brought us warm weather last weekend meaning that cherry blossoms season is right around the corner! The sakura trees will start blooming around the latter half of March this year.

However, the Corona pandemic makes the traditional Japanese cherry-blossom viewing style “hanami” difficult. Enjoying a picnic under the cherry trees with a large number of people is still difficult. Therefore, why don’t you try going on a “hanami” cherry blossom viewing walk?

This time, we would like to introduce you to some of the best-known spots for cherry blossom viewing in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo. Out of the list below, our video shows the “Sotobori Park Walking Route” (about 2km length!!). We wish you a wonderful springtime!

Sotobori Park (Gobancho, Chiyoda-ku)

Located beside the ruins of the outer moat of Edo Castle Sotobori Park is lined with beautiful cherry blossom trees, most of them being the famous Yoshino type. The total length is about 2 km.
This route is not only gorgeous when the trees are in full bloom, but also when the petals start scattering and floating on the water surface of the moat.

Nearest stations: Iidabashi Station, Ichigaya Station, Yotsuya Station
Best time to visit: Late March to early April

Around Aiai-hashi Bridge (Misakicho, Kanda, Chiyoda-ku)

A little-known spot. Here, the branches of the cherry trees reach down into the Nihonbashi River. Walk down the promenade and enjoy the view!
You can take a closer look at the cherry blossoms from Aiai-hashi Bridge because no cars are allowed to cross the bridge.

National Theater Front Garden (4-1 Hayabusacho, Chiyoda-ku)

The late-blooming cherry blossoms and weeping cherry blossoms are exceptional!
It is a superb spot where you can appreciate a total of 20 rare cherry trees with different flowering times.

Best time to visit: Late March to early April

Kioicho-Dori-Street (2 Kioicho, Chiyoda-ku)

The cherry blossom tunnel that runs from Benkei Bridge along Shimizudani is a masterpiece.
The voluminous Yaezakura will continue blooming until the end of the cherry blossom season.

Nearest stations: Akasaka-mitsuke Station, Nagatacho Station, Kojimachi Station
