Watch, feel and taste! Experience Japanese culture at Kanda-Myojin Shrine with all your senses!

Do you want to prepare delicious matcha-tea, wear a gorgeous kimono and experience different Japanese cultures? If so, the workshop held at the cultural exchange center “EDOCCO STUDIO” at Kanda Myojin Shrine is the place to go! Here, you get the chance to try out various Japanese cultures at once.

EDOCCO STUDIO hosts a wide variety of events, from traditional Japanese culture to contemporary subculture events. One event that is held regularly at the facility is the Japanese culture experience “EDOCCO Chaya”.
After watching an elegant Japanese dance (with explanations), the workshop participants get the chance to try out Japanese calligraphy and origami, wear a kimono (or hakama for men), and prepare matcha green tea in mini-workshops.

In Japanese dance, the fan is used as a prop. It symbolizes falling rain or even a bottle of rice wine!

Also, for an extra fee, you can join some special workshops, such as making accessories or creating original calligraphy T-shirts. These special crafts are all wonderful souvenirs!

All mini-workshops are in English, but even if you do not speak English or Japanese, it’s no problem at all! Just imitate your teacher at the workshop and you will be fine.

You won’t know how heavy a kimono feels unless you put it on. And you won’t know how light and fragile the whisk for preparing matcha green tea feels unless you hold it in your hands. The most enjoyable point about “EDOCCO Chaya” is that you not only “see” but also “experience” Japanese traditions. You will actually hold a calligraphy brush with your own hands or make delicious matcha with a bamboo whisk.
