Take a walk through “book town” Jimbocho for a treasure hunt – and have a spicy experience!

Kanda Secondhand Book Festival

With about 200 bookstores, the Jimbocho area is Tokyo’s bookshelf. Just walking through the so-called “book town” is a lot of fun since chances are high you will make some unique discoveries. You might also find some treasures that make great souvenirs for family and friends. So let’s go on a treasure hunt!

Exploring the “book town”

Bookstore with old classics and woodblock prints

Most bookstores in the Jimbocho area specialize in used books. Some stores sell famous Japanese classics such as The Tale of Genji. Other bookstores exclusively offer old maps and woodblock prints, while other shops sell old movie posters and screen scripts. There are also some bookstores with the latest comic books, as well as stores with architecture or art-related books only. When browsing through the stores you will find many books and magazines with cute cover designs that can be used as interior items, too.

There are two bookstores you shouldn’t miss: ‘Book House Cafe’ and ‘Kitazawa Bookstore’:

Inside 'Book House Cafe'
‘Book House Cafe’ is a bookstore with cute picture books for children created by Japanese and international artists. Some of the books have autographs inside.

‘Kitazawa Bookstore’ specializes in antique English books. The store is inside the same building as “Book House Cafe”.
