Holiday gift guide: Shopping under Tokyo’s railway viaducts

In Tokyo, various commercial facilities are born under the elevated railroad tracks. With plenty of unique restaurants and retail stores, the viaducts are a true shopping paradise! This time, we will introduce the commercial facilities under the railway viaduct where you can purchase the best gifts!

SEEKBASE

The showcases on both sides of this corridor are all packed with figures!

One of the latest trendy spots is SEEKBASE, just outside JR Akihabara Station. This culture and shopping facility is full of exciting and unique items typical for the quirky Akihabara area. In the shops inside the facility, you will find a neat present for every “otaku” (hobbyist or geek). For example, retro soft vinyl figures, old records (that can also be used for home decoration), fantastic headphones, film cameras, and vintage lenses! If you are looking for a unique gift, SEEKBASE is the place to go!

The motto of “Nippon Department Store Shokuhinkan” is “Enjoy eating all over Japan.” Even without traveling far away, here you can find delicious foods from all over the country. Why don’t you surprise your friends and family with Japanese gourmet food or rare local treats?

Inside the facility, there is a restaurant with a peach juice faucet!

HIBIYA OKUROJI

In September 2020, the new commercial facility “Hibiya OKUROJI” opened its doors in a renovated part of the brick railway viaduct, with a history of more than 100 years, between JR Yurakucho Station and JR Shimbashi Station. Many of the shops are specialized in hand-crafted products “Made in Japan”. The artistry of Japanese manufacturing is really marvelous! So as a gift for someone special, how about indigo-dyed items or a timeless leather item?
